    SUPPRESSIVE: Valacyclovir can be taken daily to suppress herpes outbreaks, or decrease the rate of transmission to a non-infected partner. Once daily valacyclovir can decrease breakouts by 70-80% and decrease the rate of transmission to an uninfected partner by 50%.

    ON HAND: Valacyclovir can be used as symptomatic therapy and taken only when outbreaks occur to speed up the resolution of the outbreak.

    Side effects? Although generally well tolerated, side effects can include headache, elevated liver enzymes, nasopharyngitis, nausea, abdominal pain, depression, arthralgia, vomiting, dizziness, rash, and abnormal blood counts.
