How does it work? Valacyclovir stops the herpes virus from replicating.
How do I use it? You should take valacyclovir at the start of a herpes outbreak.
Oral outbreaks: 4 tablets twice daily, for 1 day
Genital outbreaks: 1 tablet twice daily, for 4 days
How do I use it? Based on your number of outbreaks per year, one tablet daily is recommended to suppress outbreaks.
How well does it work? If taken daily, valacyclovir may reduce the number of outbreaks by 70%–80% and decreases the risk of viral transmission to an uninfected partner by 50% over eight months.
How do I use it? Based on your number of outbreaks per year (more than 9), one tablet twice daily is recommended to suppress outbreaks.
Side effects? Although generally well tolerated, side effects can include headache, elevated liver enzymes, nasopharyngitis, nausea, abdominal pain, depression, arthralgia, vomiting, dizziness, rash, and abnormal blood counts. If you experience any worrisome side effects while on this medication, stop the medication and consult your doctor or seek medical help.
