How does it work? Ketoconazole is an anti-fungal which kills the yeast that causes dandruff.
How do I use it? Use the shampoo 2-3 times weekly. Apply 5mL (1 teaspoonful) to your scalp and lather it in in, leaving it to sit for approximately 3-5 minutes before rinsing off.
If dandruff also affects your ears, eyebrows, forehead, nose, or chest you can apply to those areas as well!
What are the side effects? Ketoconazole shampoo is usually well-tolerated. Although less common, some people can experience itching, irritation, redness, or dry skin. Rarely, angioedema has been reported. If you experience any serious side effects stop the medication and speak to your primary care doctor or seek medical help.
Use with dyed hair? Discoloration of dyed hair and hair texture changes are possible, but less common. Hair texture changes are reversible once the shampoo is discontinued.
How does it work? Clobetasol is a topical corticosteroid that reduces itching, flaking, and inflammation/irritation.
How do I use it? Apply once to twice daily to the scalp for 1-2 weeks until the dandruff resolves. Once the dandruff has resolved you can stop usage and resume when it returns. You can also use 2-3 times weekly even when clear as maintenance to prevent flares.
What are the side effects? Side effects of this medication can include skin irritation. With prolonged usage you may experience decreased pigmentation/lighter skin color (this resolves with stopping usage), thinning of the skin, and telangiectasia's.
Usage on the face? Clobetasol is not recommended for use on facial skin as it can thin the skin with prolonged usage. The risk of skin thinning on the face is very minimal if the medication were to leak from your scalp onto your face just a few times weekly.
