    Daily Acne Cream

Clidamycin 1% is an antibiotic that kills acne causing bacteria.

Benzoyl Peroxide 5% kills acne causing bacteria and exfoliates clogged pores.

Niacinamide 4% decreases inflammation in the skin.

How do I use it? Using a pea size amount, rub a thin layer of cream each morning to all affected areas of your face. Mild stinging and irritation is normal initially, especially in dry areas. If any areas become irritated, give those areas a break for a few days and restart.

    Daily Acne Cream

What are the side effects? Side effects include burning, stinging, irritation, dryness, and redness. If you experience severe burning on normal (non-dry and non-irritated skin) you may be sensitive to the medication. If you experience any worrisome side effects stop the medication.

Note: Benzoyl peroxide can bleach non-white clothing.

Niacinamide 4% decreases inflammation in the skin.

How do I use it? Use a pea size amount, and rub a thin layer of medication at night to all areas of your face that experience acne. Avoid areas around your eyes and lips as these locations can become very irritated.

    Nightly Acne Cream

What to expect? This medication may be irritating and drying at first - eventually your skin becomes used to the medication. Start off using it 2-3 nights per week and increase frequency as tolerated. If any area becomes irritated, stop usage in that location and let the area heal before restarting there again. Foreheads can usually tolerate the medication nightly.

    Doxycycline

Doxycycline is an antibiotic but at this dosage acts as an anti-inflammatory medication.

How do I use it? Take one pill in the morning and one pill in the evening with a meal.

Why two pills a day? At this dosage doxycycline does not act as an antibiotic - instead it only works to decrease inflammation. This means that it is safe to stay on it long-term without worrying about changing bacterial flora!

    Doxycycline

How does this compare to Doxycycline 100mg? Studies have shown similar efficacy of 20mg twice daily to 100mg once daily in moderate to severe acne, but with fewer side effects! In addition, 20mg twice daily is safe to stay on long term as it is not an antibiotic dosage!

    Doxycycline

Side effects? If not taken after a meal you may experience nausea. Take pills with a full glass of water to avoid esophageal irritation. Doxycycline may make oral birth control less effective, and may make you more sensitive to the sun. Rare side effects can include enterocolitis, rashes, headache, vertigo/dizziness, and rare immunologic reactions. If you experience any worrisome side effects stop the medication and seek medical help.

    Spironolactone

Spironolactone is very effective in decreasing oil production and improving female hormonal acne. This is acne that is typically located on the lower face, cheeks, chin, jawline, neck, back, or chest, and may flare with your menstrual cycle. It works by blocking the testosterone receptors in the skin.

How effective is it? In one study 91% of females had significant improvement, and two thirds of those women experienced greater than 90% improvement in their acne!

Because you selected mild acne, you would likely see significant improvement with just one of the medications alone - although both together would work better. The Nightly Acne Cream (tretinoin) is better for blackheads and small non-inflamed bumps, while the Daily Acne Cream (clindamycin & benzoyl peroxide) is better for inflamed bumps.

If you would like to choose just one of the medications, select "Customize My Plan" in the next section.

You will see significant improvement with the recommended regimen. However, because you selected moderate acne, consider adding spironolactone pills to your regimen if you are experiencing acne at your jawline, or flares with your menstrual cycle - as this could be a sign of hormonal acne. Spironolactone pills can also improve non-hormonal acne by decreasing oil production.
